Problem Identifier Unit Screen//v.w/ RR Template Carpet beetles

Problem
Irregular holes are chewed in carpets, blankets, clothing, and other articles made of animal fur, hair, feathers, or hides. Light brown to black grubs up to ΒΌ inch long may be seen crawling on both damaged and undamaged items. The grubs are distinctly segmented, and covered with circular rows of stiff, dark hairs.

Analysis
(Attagenus megatoma and Anthrenus species)
The larvae of these beetles damage carpets, clothes, upholstery, and other products of animal origin. Some species also feed on stored foods. The adult beetles are about 1/8 inch long, and may be black or mottled gray, brown, and white. They usually live outdoors, feeding on pollen and nectar. The beetles fly into homes during the late spring or early summer and lay their eggs in cracks or crevices, or on clothes, carpets, or other materials. The emerging larvae seek out dark, undisturbed locations in which to feed. They shed their skins a number of times during their development. Most of the larvae hibernate during the winter, and pupate in the spring.

Solution
Shake out, brush, and air infested clothes and blankets. To kill remaining grubs, dry-clean infested items. Vacuum infested rooms, particularly under furniture and in corners. Destroy the sweepings immediately. Kill remaining insects with ORTHO HI-POWER Indoor Insect Fogger--Formula IV or ORTHO Home Pest Insect Control.
